Hiking Trip Details:
You’ll begin your hike from New Found Gap and will reach Indian Gap (3.3 mi) for a short warm-up. Then you’ll continue hiking to the highest point on the Appalachian Trail – Clingmans Dome (6643 ft) and hike back for a total of 17 miles on Day 1.
On day 2, you will continue your hike from Clingmans Dome to Buckeye Gap for a total of 14.5 miles round trip.
*The actual miles is 31.5 miles broken down as 17 miles on day 1 and 14.5 miles on day 2.
Clingmans Dome is the highest peak in the Smoky Mountains, in Tennessee and on the Appalachian Trail. Since the Appalachian trail is the dividing line between TN and NC through the Smokies, being at the highest peak, you get to see a 360 degree view in both directions from the Dome. How awesome would it be to check this off your bucket list?!
The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is almost 2,190 miles long, passes through 14 states, eight different national forests, six national park units and numerous state parks, forests, and game lands. But you don’t have to hike every mile of the Trail to experience its beauty (and toils).
